Garland: Its Premier Century
An Illustrated History by Michael R. Hayslip
Rich blackland–free for the settling– drew a wave of hearty colonists in the 1850s to Duck Creek, an isolated outpost on the gulf coastal plains of Texas. In less than 50 years, the colony had blossomed into a thriving community, and on April 18, 1891, it was officially incorporated as a city and given a new name: Garland.
Guided by strong leadership and committed citizenry, Garland witnessed much change in the years that followed. Its population multiplied hundreds of times over. An economy originally rooted in agriculture branched out in new directions. Its community life evolved, fostering a rich tradition of volunteerism and a diverse cultural scene. Today, Garland ranks as one of Texas’ leading cities.
In this carefully researched volume, author and historian Michael Hayslip paints a colorful portrait of Garland, accenting his text with vignettes and anecdotes of the people and events that shaped history. Recounted in vivid detail are Garland’s trials and triumphs- the devastation of fire, the reconstruction of a city, the vicissitudes of politics, the solid values of its people. Hayslip’s narrative is richly illustrated with dozens of historical photographs, while beautiful color plates showcase Garland today. In addition, a special chapter written by Bill Sloan features the businesses and organizations that have supported the development of this project and the community at large.
Garland: Its Premiere Century is a lasting tribute to a city embarking on its second century of cityhood- a volume to be treasured and turned to for years to come.
